Very particular

As an artist, I get strange obsessions. Something about a material or an image will seduce me. I have an artist friend who uses the word 'authentic' to describe this attraction but I use 'particular'. I'll say, 'that's very particular' and I mean that there's something about that object that is compelling and unique to me, something that draws me. I don't always know what it is but I do know that these visual or tactile obsessions are what fuel my work.

At the moment, greaseproof paper is one of these things.

There's something about the combination of translucency and opaqueness that I find utterly irresistible.

And when I finally got to it, the little plum & almond cake was delicious too!

  1. Interesting! I can see the attraction. There's something quite "you" about this - that sense of fabric and light, plus the lines and rigidity that you usually would add with a 2nd item like thread or pins.

And you've reminded me of a lovely drawing on tracing paper that I liked the other day. I just might go buy it now. :)

  4. as tina said, i can see the attraction, too. and i know what you mean about becoming fixated or obsessed with a material, object, whatever. for me, it's usually a particular texture and/or color of an object or, lately, "bright" soft gray sky.

  7. Oh Stephanie, you would have loved the sky I saw today - soft, hazy sunlight filtering through clouds and making the Georgian skyline of Clifton glow and shimmer. I was driving or I would have taken a photo.

  10. I love that you can see the paper fibers in those photographs. And I think that paper is very teasing, I can see the cake but I don't know what it is yet... Makes me want to get out a sheet and crumple it just to draw the planes.
